McGuinty Government Making Progress on Diabetes in York West
New Diabetes Education Team at Black Creek Community Health Centre

(York West) - Ontario is taking important steps that enable more people with diabetes to live health lives, while reducing the number of people who develop the disease.

Black Creek Community Health Centre in York West will be home to one of two diabetes education teams within the GTA, designed to help individuals better manage their diabetes and avoid diabetes related complications.

"This is great news for the people in your community. Diabetes can pose serious health risks for many people and it is important that they have proper resources and education to effectively fight against the disease," says local MPP Mario Sergio.

Part of the Ontario Diabetes Strategy includes the funding for 51 new diabetes education teams across the province. Teams consisting primarily of a registered nurse and a dietician will work with family physicians and other diabetes care experts, like chiropodists, physiotherapists and social workers.

"The addition of the two new diabetes education teams in Central LHIN aligns with the chronic disease management and prevention priority of our Integrated Health Services Plan. Each team will work collaboratively with other health care professionals to enhance education, medical care and self-management approaches for diabetic patients. This is a positive step to continue the momentum of meeting the needs in relations to our priorities," says Kim Baker, Chief Executive officer of the Central LHIN.

Ontario is developing three diabetes prevention programs for groups at highest risk for diabetes. The Toronto, Peel and Northwestern Health unites - all of which have high rates of diabetes - will be working with community partners to develop programs.
