FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE McGuinty Government Opens Door for 1,000 New Apprentices YORK WEST - The McGuinty government is investing in Ontario's future prosperity by creating 1,000 skilled-trades training spaces under the Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship Program, Mario Sergio, MPP for York West announced today on behalf of the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Chris Bentley. "College students in York West will now have an even better opportunity to succeed in their selected fields now that additional skilled training is available. Apprenticeship training gives our students the added skills needed to effectively compete in our competitive workforce," said Mario Sergio, M.P.P. Local colleges receiving the additional spaces include Humber College, Centennial College, and George Brown College. The combined additional investment total is nearly $2.2 million. The provincial government is investing nearly $13.6 million over four years to train college apprentices in 31 new projects. Beginning in September, 1,000 students will be able to train in additional trades within the automotive, heavy-duty equipment, industrial, and truck and coach sectors of our labour force. The Co-op Apprenticeship Program offers people pursuing a postsecondary education the opportunity to register in a program that will lead to dual certification. Individuals can complete a college diploma, and at the same time register as an apprentice and work toward the provincial Certificate of Qualification. "A strong apprenticeship program is an important part of our Reaching Higher Plan for Education," said Minister Chris Bentley. The Reaching Higher Plan for higher education was launched in the 2005 Ontario Budget and will see $6.2 billion invested over five years to increase access and improve the quality and accountability of higher education in Ontario.
