For Immediate Release STUDENTS SUCCEED WITH SUMMER COMPANY MISSISSAUGA – The Ontario government is spending more than $1 million in 2006 to provide 370 students across the province with first-hand experience in starting their own summer businesses, Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship Harinder Takhar said today. Through Ontario’s Summer Companyprogram, enterprising students aged 15-29 receive hands-on business training and mentoring, awards of up to $3,000 and the essential assistance needed to start and grow a successful business. “Summer Companyis a fantastic opportunity to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit in Ontario’s future business leaders,” said Takhar. “Ninety-nine percent of businesses in Ontario are of the small and medium variety. The McGuinty government recognizes that encouraging dedication in young entrepreneurs will lead to success, innovation, better jobs and overall, a bright future for Ontarians.” Mississauga resident Ian Duke took part in Summer Company to launch an aerial photography business. “By combining my passions for business, photography, and aviation, I’ve been able to work in an industry I find challenging and enjoyable, while being my own boss,” said Ian. “My friends were pretty surprised when I began passing out my business card. Even one year ago I wouldn’t have imagined being where I am now,” added Ian, the company’s sole proprietor. Small Business Enterprise Centres and other program providers help deliver the Summer Company program to students across the province. Pam Banks, acting manager of the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre, works with the mentors who provide business skills and expertise to the seven successful applicants this year under the Summer Company program in Mississauga. Banks says the experience is very rewarding. “This is an exciting opportunity for the new and upcoming entrepreneurs within our community,” Banks said. “We encourage them first to believe in themselves, then provide the necessary tools to help them manage their businesses successfully. Our support helps these young innovators realize their dreams.” Successful applicants are chosen through a competitive process, based on the business plans they submit, their understanding of the business idea and the probability of success. “Entrepreneurs are essential to the growth of Ontario’s economy,” Takhar said. “The government is proud to support their efforts and pleased to reward their dedication and hard work through the Summer Company program.” For information on this and other programs designed to help young entrepreneurs, contact the Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship’s website at www.sbe.gov.on.ca
