McGuinty Government to Provide Summer Jobs for Youth at Risk
Jane and Finch one of Three Designated Areas to Receive Funding

TORONTO — The McGuinty government is helping more than 300 young people in disadvantaged areas of Toronto by providing summer employment, Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Monte Kwinter, announced today.

Local M.P.P. Mario Sergio said, “I am delighted that there are positive options being provided for disadvantaged youth that will really make a difference in their lives. Different levels of government and community partners are coming together to develop effective crime prevention strategies to help disadvantaged youth improve their job and life skills development. This truly is a positive step in the right direction.” Stated Sergio.

The $500,000 in funding supports the Mayor’s Panel on Community Safety, which was formed to find solutions to gun-related violence in Toronto. The funding will provide more than 300 jobs for four weeks in three designated areas of Toronto – Malvern, Jane/Finch and Jamestown.

“This program is very exciting because the youth involved will benefit not only from the wages they earn, but also from having access to new experiences,” Children and Youth Services Minister Dr. Marie Bountrogianni said. “It’s another example of how our government is committed to helping Ontario’s children and youth become healthy, productive citizens.”

"Working with the community, the City of Toronto has identified funding priorities for high-risk areas,” Toronto Mayor David Miller said. “And creating summer jobs for youth is clearly a crucial part of our Community Safety Action Plan. This funding from the province is a much-needed, welcome contribution."

“By intervening early we can help make a difference in the life of at-risk youth,” Attorney General Michael Bryant said. “With this funding, our justice system is making a positive contribution that will help keep our youth on the right track so they can have a good future.”

“My ministry is pleased to support Mayor Miller’s program by providing sport and recreation jobs for youths who might otherwise be left behind,” Tourism and Recreation Minister Jim Bradley said. “This employment experience will serve them well throughout their lives.”

“This funding continues the government’s commitment to ensuring our communities are safe and prosperous,” Kwinter said. “There is a need to not only focus on enforcement, but also to develop long-term strategies to address prevention and deterrence. We are pleased to be able to help the City of Toronto provide summer employment for these at-risk youth.”

Sergio stated, “ We must do all we can to protect, encourage and establish our youth. Our job is to equip them so they can effectively run toward their future goals.”
