Local M.P.P. Mario Sergio Fights for Community Safety

York West Liberal M.P.P. Mario Sergio sought answers today in the Ontario Legislature, on the McGuinty government's response to the recent increase in violent crime in his riding and the City of Toronto.

"Despite a drop in Toronto's overall crime rate in recent years, the number of violent crimes has increased by six per cent since 1999," Sergio said. "What is being done to re-assure residents that they can walk the streets at night without their lives being threatened?"

Sergio directed his question to Attorney General, Michael Bryant and Minister of Community and Correctional Services, Monte Kwinter.

The increase in weapons is an issue, which not only significantly undermines the peace and safety of my constituents;" Sergio said," it also affects their very livelihood."

Eighty - year- old resident Mrs. Liliana Badiali, remembers the days when she first came from Italy "I didn't even need to lock my doors at night. Times have changed," she said, " services need to be updated to meet those needs…"

In their response, Bryant and Kwinter pointed to a number of expert advisory panels that have been set up, including the Advisory panel on Community Safety. These forums will centre on solutions to gun-related violence, with a particular focus on youth. The special unit crown prosecutor is working with police experts to develop a sentencing package which will take into account the impact of gun violence in the community. This documentation will be used by Crowns to support their sentencing submissions when seeking stiffer sentences.

"Only by fostering unity and co-operation will we build safe, strong communities with a quality of life that is second to none."
