For Immediate Release MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT ELIMINATING FEES ON ALL INTERNATIONAL ADOPTIONS TORONTO - The McGuinty government is easing the financial burden on Ontarians who want to adopt a child from another country, Minister of Children and Youth Services Dr. Marie Bountrogianni announced today. "Families adopting children from other countries are already paying substantial costs," said Bountrogianni. "They have asked us to make it easier and we have responded. I am proud that today we are able to fulfill our commitment to them." In 2000, the provincial government began collecting a fee of $460 for international adoptions involving relatives and $925 for non-relatives under the Intercountry Adoption Act. The provincial government has cancelled this fee effective today. "We're making it a little bit easier for Ontarians to bring a child into their family and give them a place to call home," said Bountrogianni. "This government's intention has always been to eliminate the processing fee for international adoptions." - 30 - Contacts: Lisa Clements Anne Machowski-Smith Disponible en français |
